The Chancellor announced today that government’s Job Support Scheme (JSS) will be expanded to protect jobs and support businesses required to close their doors as a result of coronavirus restrictions.
Businesses required to shut in accordance with the Government’s response to the pandemic will be entitled to claim grants under the expanded JSS. This will see two-thirds of employees’ salary, up to £2,100 per month paid by the Government.
The employer will still be required to pay any NIC and pension contributions. To claim the grant the business must not be able to operate and employees must not have been able to work for seven days.
In addition to the expanded JSS, cash grants will also be offered to businesses forced to close. These grants are tied to the business’ rateable value and can be worth up to £3,000 per month. The grants will be payable every two weeks.
The scheme will begin on 1 November and will be available for six months, with a review point in January. In line with the rest of the JSS, payments to businesses will be made in arrears, via a HMRC claims service that will be available from early December.
